Vote for Alan
Alan has facilitated alternative medication for thousands of people who have to take Thyroxin medication every day and who were in desperate need. In short, the government subsidises only one brand of thyroxin medication, there are about 70,000 kiwis who are reliant on this this drug and recently, due to a formulation change in the medication, many have experienced server side-effects (which were never present before). Side effects included sever headaches, heart palpitations, weight-gain, nausea, fatigue, faint spells, loss of colour sight and more. Many sufferers did not understand what was happening, many thought they were simply going crazy and many spent a lot of money going to specialists and doctors in an attempt to figure out what was causing this. Others, who do not have the resources to do so, simply suffered (and many still do).
Alan, a pharmacist in Temuka, went out of his way to help those us, and while everyone else seemed to be powerless to help, or simply lacked the inclination, Alan sourced alternative thyroxin and sent it to everyone he could around the country and does not make a profit from it. I don't think it has been easy for him but he has persevered and he and his staff have helped thousands of us. He has also pushed for the government to look at subsidising an alternative supplier.
The replacement medication has made a remarkable difference - I know that my sister, my mother and I (we all have to take this medication every day) have gained some quality of life back. I can't stress enough the difference it makes every day.
