Karen was training very hard 4 years ago this December for the Coast to Coast multi sport race the following February. One Saturday morning she was out cycling and was knocked off and run over by a truck, it was touch and go whether she would make it and she was flown to Waikato hospital where she was in intensive care for 5 days and had as many operations, after 3 weeks in hospital she came home to begin a very long slow road to recovery, she had a goal to achieve and that was to do the race the following year, the medical people were not so hopeful with the huge injuries she had sustained, but she was determined, she fought and worked so hard and put the hours in with constant exercise programmes and physio.
She went on to complete the Coast to Coast and various other sports events since including the New York marathon.
Through it all she rarely complained even though she suffered dreadful pain and then the frustration of trying to walk and do basic everyday things again - never mind cross the South Island!

With her positive attitude towards life she is an inspiration to many of the people she meets and a trip back to her favourite place Christchurch ( the finish line of the Coast to Coast) would be a great surprise.
