Joe Houghton has been a permanent fixture in the Wairarapa all of his life. All that know him laugh about his place in history being noted by transport. He used to farm by horse, than by 2 wheel motorcycle, then 3 wheels, then came quads, and now he says that he enjoys the comfort of his truck! Joe spends his days doing anything and everything, a true jack of all trades, but mostly he loves showing tourists visiting NZ around some of the beautiful Wairarapa area. What a fantastic ambassador for NZ!
Joe is an inspiration to others that he works with and in his community. He is so respected that he is a sounding board for many of the local people and even in the last year, people have been known to call Joe for help before the ambulance! Joe gives all his heart and love to everyone he meets, and never has a harsh word. He will help anyone and anything in need, including the birdlife on the Onoke Spit which he helps manage with DOC. People as kind and giving as Joe are few and far between these days, and I would love to reward someone for being an inspiration!
